Sinus lifts

To determine whether you are suitable for dental implant treatment, you will be assessed during a clinical examination to ensure you have enough available jawbone into which the implant can be inserted. Some patients who lack the ideal jawbone density will require surgical preparation in the upper jaw known as a sinus lift.

A sinus lift is an oral surgical procedure that extends into the sinus cavity above the upper jaw and packs bone graft material into this space. The procedure takes place under local anaesthetic and is done in the dental chair. Patients may experience some swelling and tenderness afterwards but this can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers.

Once this site is left to heal, this graft material, which can be made from artificial or natural bone particles, will be incorporated by the surrounding bone and form a solid structure very similar to bone. After the area is determined to be satisfactory, the dental implant can be placed.

This procedure has made it possible for thousands of people to have their smiles restored with implant dentistry, where they would previously have had to wear a denture for the rest of their life.
